The Associated Press reports that 50 years ago this month 42% of all Americans smoked. Surgeon General Luther Terry released a report linking cigarette smoking to illness and death. Even though much improvement has come about since that time, an amazing 43 million Americans are still smoking. Each year an estimated 443,000 people die premature deaths which are directly related to smoking. The Center for Disease Control in Atlanta reports that 8.6 million people live with serious illness caused by smoking.
